The Race To The Left

In his first week, Biden started the race to the left. Nothing I did not expect, I just thought he might proceed slowly.

No reason to enumerate his actions. Not a damn one of them do I agree with. And there is nothing anyone can do to stop the race to socialism.

Our market economy will be history, replaced by government knows best.

Did you see he is forming a commission to study judicial reform, aka court-packing.

His campaign’s central theme of bipartisanship and unity seems were only words. I look for the biggest expansion of federal power since the Great Society, and institutional changes that give progressives dominance over American politics.

Now that the State Department has formally declared China to be engaged in genocide against the Uighurs, it will be interesting to see the response in the private sector, especially among those who have prided themselves on their commitment to human rights, minorities and speak- ing truth to power. Will they continue to deal with a country designated genocidal regime?

Will companies that pride themselves on their wokeness on cutting-edge social-justice issues display moral clarity on genocide?

Will I be surprised if it’s swept under the rug like the summer riots were?

I Lost More Than A Friend

I am somewhere on the depression scale. January and February have always been dismal months for me. Often too cold to be outside and I have many projects to do outside. So I am anxious about not being able to do them. This puts me in a mood, without even taking into account social isolation and the political crap. It would be nice to have someone to have a beer with. I have had exactly 12 beers in 18 months. I’ll bet most of you are feeling about the same to one degree or another.

All these brought me to reflect on a dear friend I lost in November. We went back to our 20’s together. He loved music. He played a Les Paul, not all that well, but enough to amuse himself. Tom was losing kidney function and refused dialysis. If he could not have a transplant he was resigned to die. He refused contact with all of his many friends. Even his sister was mostly excluded. The last time he would take my calls or acknowledge an email was six months before he died.

Tom was always quick with a laugh and a solid friend. If he had an enemy, I never knew it.

I not only miss our sharing of music but our conversations. I miss Tom.

Car battery prices are falling, but Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk warned this week about a lithium battery shortage by 2022 as government emission mandates force automakers to build more electric cars. This will drive up production costs. Mr. Musk hopes to develop a lithium production plant in Nevada, but environmentalists want to keep lithium in the ground.

A lithium clay project in Nevada has been seeking federal approval for more than a decade, and the Center for Biological Diversity is trying to stop a lithium mine in the desert that could supply 400,000 electric car batteries annually. China controls 70% of the world’s lithium supply and 83% of the anodes used in batteries.

The Center for Biological Diversity is well-staffed and funded to prevent mining. Ever heard of them? I expect not. Check out the job titles. Imagine who is paying their salaries. You are! It’s a multimillion-dollar nonprofit with a substantial portion of its income coming from government grants. The government gives these organizations taxpayer money, which they use to sue the government.

So on one hand the government is requiring electric cars and giving tax credits to those that do. While also funding organizations to sue the government to prevent electric cars.

More absolutely stupid, counter-productive things the government has implemented in the name of climate change. For example:

Corn ethanol mandates and subsidies, which study after study have shown to have zero net effect on CO2 emissions, and which likely still exist only because the first Presidential primary is in Iowa. Even Koch Industries, who is one of the largest beneficiaries of this corporate welfare, has called for their abolition
Electric car subsidies, 90% of which go to the wealthy to help subsidize their virtue signalling, and which require more fossil fuels to power than an unsubsidized Prius or even than a SUV.
Wind subsidies, which are promoting the stupidist form for power ever, whose unpredictability means fossil fuel plants still have to be kept running on hot backup and whose blades are the single largest threat to endangered bird species.
